Continuing my contributions to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I got the opportunity to work again with some talented friends at Wētā FX to introduce a new set of super heroes in the film “Eternals” (2021) Directed by Chloé Zhao. With all the different characters and super powers, this beautiful film was a creative blast to work on.
My work was featured in the final climax battle of this high fantasy film, where *spoiler alert* the Eternals battle the Deviant leader Kro as well as a planet sized celestial being and unfortunately, each other. I animated Thena (Angelina Jolie) interacting with Kro (Bill Skarsgård) and all his tentacles in the cave. As well as animating Ikaris (Richard Madden) facing off on the beach against Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff), various CG ropes and restraints and Kro dazed in a sandstorm.
This work combined live action characters with their CG digital double versions, seamlessly blending into each other and back again. Live action plates were fused with full CG elements and FX interacting with each other beautifully. Performances were a mixture of fully keyframe action, heavily edited motion capture and match moved stunt actors.
